This was an aha moment when I talked with my dad.
My dad has been working on a large campus construction project for the last five years. The job is demanding, and he often needs to work during weekends. And he has already passed his retiring age; he doesn’t have to do it. But he chose to keep going…
‘For the past five years, I felt I learnt a lot!’ my dad said to me.
Ah, I understand now. I understand the very essence has kept him going. My dad had already been an expert in construction before he took on this project. He didn’t simply go to work, provide professional advice based on what he already knew and hope the project would be completed in five years. Instead, he recognised the challenge, was willing to learn, credited his growth, and developed with the project.
Yes, the sense of self-growing and developing unleashed a deep level of satisfaction and joy within him. He is looking forward to another day of hard work even though he is tired and a lot of work is waiting for him.
Suddenly I realised this approach or this way of doing things could be used for any aspect of our life or any work we need to do, from completing a PhD to creating a loving relationship to having a successful career.
Now I know a sure way to bring joy to anything I do. Thanks, dad!
