We all know by default what is learn, how to learn and why to learn…
Thanks to the course: Uncommon Sense Teaching; I understand more about how memory works or learning happens from a neuroscience perspective. Let me share with you the first pathway __ declarative learning pathway:
First and foremost:
- Learning involves creating sets of links in long-term memory in the neocortex. Whatever you want to learn, you aim to get it linked in your neocortex.
- The neocortex is a roughly 2 mm thick, felt-like layer of neurons and related cells and materials covering the surface of the brain. It is about the size of a napkin.
- The neocortex can store immense amounts of information by connecting neurons together related to whatever you are learning.
So, how does your brain get the information to long-term memory through the declarative pathway?
It starts with working memory. The working memory receives and sends information to the hippocampus and the neocortex. But the information that working memory sends to the neocortex is weaker. So, let’s focus on what the hippocampus does to assist in creating links in the neocortex.
The hippocampus cannot hold nearly as much information as the neocortex can. Instead, it can quickly get hold of small pieces of information, like an index; then, it’ll ‘whisper’ the information to the neocortex to help create links in long-term memory. The hippocampus can do this only when the working memory isn’t working. In addition, it helps working memory access all the information in long-term memory since it stores indexing links that know where to look in long-term memory related to a particular piece of information that’s been learned.
Through spaced repetition and retrieval practice, the links in the neocortex are strengthened. Eventually, working memory can directly access the information in long-term memory without the help of the hippocampus.
