Have you had the following experience?
You’re starting an exciting big project. Everything is set up, and time is blocked out to work on the associated tasks. Somehow, you cannot focus on the task, and nothing gets done at the end of the day.
I’ve been there recently. I had a whole day blocked out to write a draft book proposal. I was so excited and overwhelmed, dreaming about the book’s success, but I simply couldn’t sit down and get into it. After eight hours, I was pretty much still in the same place when the day started. The deadline to submit my proposal was one-day closer…
I jumped straight in, blaming myself. This time, I caught myself in time. Set aside the blames, I asked why. Why could I not concentrate on the task I really wanted to work on? While reflecting, I realised this was not the first time this had happened. It happened when I was about to work on a challenging project that led to opportunities. All my mental energy was then channelled to the feeling of excitement and overwhelm, which was hard to contain. And nothing was left for the required cognitive activities. I was dazed.
Not long after my book proposal incident, my teacher appeared and shared a piece of invaluable advice with me. My teacher is Dr Wayne Dyer. His voice came through the car speaker: think small and get big things done.
The key is to be present and focus on the small task to be completed today; rather than getting immobilised by ponding on the gazillion tasks before the finishing line or being overly indulged in the success that may come after.
Think small to get big things done!
